Mages deal ranged spell damage through Arcane, Fire or Frost. Arcane manages expensive burn windows, Fire converts critical strikes into Pyroblast opportunities, and Frost combines spell procs with control and defense.
Missile Barrage is a change of cast choice, not a buff to ignore while finishing an arbitrary number of Blasts. Respond to the proc and then reassess your Mana.

For ordinary quest enemies, shorten the Blast cycle when the next cast would kill them. A full long-encounter conservation plan is unnecessary on a target that dies in seconds.
Ignite rewards your critical strikes, while Hot Streak changes the next Pyroblast cast. Watch the proc and target life expectancy together; a powerful spell that lands after the target dies contributes nothing.
PyroblastScorchPyroblast
Pull with Pyroblast once learned, then use Fireball while the enemy approaches. Save Fire Blast for an effective finishing hit rather than spending it on a target with almost no Health.
Fingers of Frost and Shatter make frozen-target interactions important even when a boss cannot be physically rooted. Read the proc state instead of assuming a visible Frost Nova is required.

Frost is a practical control-focused leveling choice. Pull with Frostbolt, retain distance, and use Frost Nova when a second enemy reaches you.
Leveling a Mage
Use Frostbolt to slow an approaching enemy when you need distance, and Polymorph an extra humanoid or beast before starting the pull.
Conjure water for yourself and offer it to the group before the run. Keep mana and healing potions for emergencies. Use offensive consumables during a fight that warrants their cost, rather than consuming them for every short quest pull.
