Fire Mage guide

Fire turns critical strikes into faster Pyroblast casts and maintains a fire-vulnerability debuff when assigned. Frostfire Bolt is part of the current beta damage toolkit.

Beta gameplay guide · Updated 12 October 2026

Rotation and opener

Use Molten Armor and establish the group’s Improved Scorch stacks when you are responsible for them.

Combat priority

  1. Pyroblast

For a fresh quest target, start the long Pyroblast cast before combat. In a dungeon, establish tank threat before committing a large opening hit.

  2. Scorch

Maintain Improved Scorch when the build takes it and the target survives long enough to repay the setup. A nearly dead trash mob does not need a full debuff cycle.

  3. Pyroblast

Use the cast-time reduction from the supplied Hot Streak talent when its stacks make Pyroblast practical. This is the Forever stacking talent, not the Retail two-crit instant-cast rule.

  4. Fireball

Use Fireball as the reliable filler in the level-30 beta. The level-60 Frostfire variant uses Frostfire Bolt once that spell is available.

  5. Fire Blast

Use while moving or to finish a target, especially when the Wake of Fire interaction is ready. Do not interrupt a useful completed Fireball just to press an instant attack.

Multiple targets and dungeon pulls

Once the tank has a settled group, place Flamestrike on the enemies, follow with Blast Wave when available, and use Arcane Explosion while they remain gathered.

For solo kiting, gather a small pack, Frost Nova it, step clear, place Flamestrike, then slow the approaching enemies with Cone of Cold. Keep an escape route before repeating point-blank casts.

A Fire-immune or resistant target changes your spell choice. Frostbolt remains a usable alternative; a visually dramatic Fire rotation is no help against an enemy it cannot damage.

Resources and cooldowns

The calculator calls the Pyroblast cast-time proc Hot Streak; beta rotation references may call the stacking effect Heating Up. Track the actual buff and its stacks. Avoid wasting a ready Pyroblast by continuing filler casts out of habit.

  • Use Combustion, when allocated, during a sustained casting window rather than on the final seconds of a trash pull. Coordinate on-use effects with that window.
  • Counterspell an enemy healer or dangerous caster even if it delays your next Fireball. Preventing that spell can save more group time than one extra cast.
  • Keep Mana Shield for a real survival problem: it spends the same Mana you need for damage. Fire Ward and Frost Ward are more targeted answers to the corresponding incoming school.

Specialization mechanics and group play

Ignite rewards your critical strikes, while Hot Streak changes the next Pyroblast cast. Watch the proc and target life expectancy together; a powerful spell that lands after the target dies contributes nothing.

Wake of Fire makes the timing of Fire Blast relevant. Use its supplied effect as the reason for your instant cast, not a habit of pressing Fire Blast whenever it lights up.

Frostfire Bolt belongs to a later-level build. Keep the beta opener written around Fireball so a new level-30 player is not instructed to cast an unlearned spell.

In PvP, alternate pressure with control: Polymorph a second opponent, Counterspell a healer, and retain Frost Nova and Blink for a melee opponent reaching you.

Important talent effects

Ignite

Your critical strikes from Fire damage spells cause the target to burn for an additional 8% of your spell's damage over 4 sec.

5 ranks

Pyroblast

Hurls an immense fiery boulder that causes 155 to 185 Fire damage and an additional 76 Fire damage over 12 sec.

1 rank

Improved Scorch

Your Scorch spell has a 33% chance to cause your target to be vulnerable to Fire damage. This vulnerability increases all Fire damage you deal to your target by 3% and lasts 30 sec, stacking up to 5 times.

3 ranks

Hot Streak

Your non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, and Scorch grant Hot Streak for 15 sec. Hot Streak reduces the cast time of Pyroblast by 25%, stacking up to 3 times.

1 rank · Requires Pyroblast

Fire Power

Increases the damage done by your Fire spells by 2%.

5 ranks

Combustion

When activated, this spell causes each of your Fire damage spell hits to increase your critical strike chance with Fire damage spells by 10%. This effect lasts until you have caused 4 non-periodic critical strikes with Fire spells.

PvP talent choices and play

Impact and Blast Wave create space or interrupt pressure. Use a proc-driven Pyroblast after establishing a safe casting window, and keep defensive tools available when an opponent closes into melee.

Stats and equipment decisions

Priority / equipmentHow to use it
Hit / Spell PowerHit improves reliability against stronger enemies; Spell Power improves the damage of successful casts. Compare them with your talent Hit already included.
Critical StrikeParticularly relevant to Ignite and Hot Streak. Its value comes from actual Fire interactions rather than a universal caster ranking.
Spirit / IntellectRegeneration and a larger Mana reserve reduce downtime between quest pulls. Neither replaces enough damage to finish the enemy safely.
Weapon choiceCompare spell bonuses on a staff against a one-hand weapon plus off-hand. Weapon swing speed does not improve Fireball.

Enchanting equipment

For inexpensive leveling preparation, Enchant Bracer - Inferior Stamina and Enchant Chest - Inferior Stamina add survival to equipment you expect to keep. Prioritize an important weapon or role-specific item upgrade before spending heavily on temporary armor.

Consumables and preparation

Lesser Arcane Elixir

Use this sustained Spell Power buff for a dungeon run; short trash pulls rarely justify an expensive burst potion.

Lesser Spellblasting Potion

Save the temporary Spell Power increase for a boss damage window when you can stand still and cast.

Minor Wizard Oil

Apply the temporary weapon enhancement before the run. It supplies Spell Power without requiring a different weapon.

Healing Potion

Reserve for damage that would otherwise kill you. A dead caster loses every remaining cast in the fight.

Mana Agate

Conjure your Mana Gem before combat once the spell is trained; using preparation time for this avoids wasting a damage window.

Briny Seafood Stew

Eat before the pull for its Spell Power food buff, and keep conjured water ready for recovery between pulls.

Useful profession pairings

Engineering offers explosives for gathered enemies and target dummies for a dangerous solo pull. Budget materials and choose moments where an extra tool changes the outcome instead of using it without a plan.

Tailoring turns cloth into usable caster equipment, including the school-specific leveling pieces. Enchanting is an alternative when you want to improve equipment and use surplus drops as materials.

Alchemy with Herbalism provides your own elixirs and recovery consumables. Learn Cooking and First Aid independently for food buffs and recovery; primary profession choices do not prevent those secondary skills.

Races and racial abilities

Gnome is a practical Alliance choice for a caster who values Escape Artist when rooted or slowed. That escape can preserve a cast window or prevent a melee opponent from reaching you.

Troll brings Berserking for a timed casting window, while Undead offers Will of the Forsaken against fear, charm and sleep. Choose between the active utility you will use rather than treating an unsupported beta damage ranking as settled.

Skyborne access and faction traditions are part of Forever. Choose the faction before comparing racial utility; do not apply a Human melee weapon racial to spell damage.

Leveling and solo play

  1. Pull with Pyroblast once learned, then use Fireball while the enemy approaches. Save Fire Blast for an effective finishing hit rather than spending it on a target with almost no Health.
  2. Frostbolt is useful when you need a slow even though your damage talents are Fire. Your class toolkit matters more than keeping every cast the same school.
  3. Test two- or three-enemy AoE pulls before taking a larger pack. Escaping with Frost Nova is faster than recovering from a death.
  4. Take useful new Fire ranks at the trainer and conjure recovery supplies before travel. The level-30 game uses Fireball; Frostfire Bolt is a later-level option.

/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][] Polymorph

Mouse over the marked control target without changing your main damage target. Avoid aiming at a mob already covered in periodic damage.

Immediate Counterspell

#showtooltip Counterspell
