WOW FOREVER · PLAYER REFERENCE

Discipline Priest guide

Discipline combines shields, Penance and direct healing. It can prepare an ally for incoming damage rather than reacting only after health drops, but shields still need to be timed around Weakened Soul.

Beta gameplay guide · Updated 12 October 2026

Rotation and opener

Prepare Power Word: Shield on the player who will take the next dangerous hit. Assign Power Infusion to a suitable caster before the fight.

Combat priority

  1. Power Word: Shield

Before a predictable damage event, shield the players who will actually take it. Shielding the tank before the pull gives the initial healing plan time to develop.

  2. Penance

Use for a player needing concentrated single-target healing. Start the channel when its ticks will land usefully; interrupt it only when survival or a more urgent target requires that.

  3. Flash Heal

Use a fast direct heal when a target cannot wait for a longer cast. It is an urgency tool, not a reason to replace every efficient slower heal.

  4. Binding Heal

Choose when both you and another player need healing. Spending a single cast on both targets is more useful than healing yourself while the tank continues to fall.

  5. Prayer of Healing

Use for damage affecting several members of the target party. A large heal into mostly full-health players wastes the Mana that the next pull may need.

Multiple targets and dungeon pulls

Prepare selected shields before the expected hit, then use Prayer of Healing for injured party members. Shields and direct healing answer different timing problems.

When a party is spread, position so your relevant casts can reach the intended players. Do not chase one minor injury while leaving the tank outside your healing range.

For solo damage, use Holy Fire, Smite and Penance where appropriate to the allocated damage build. Do not confuse the DPS preset with the healing preset simply because both use Discipline talents.

Resources and cooldowns

Track Weakened Soul before trying to reapply a shield. Renewed Hope supports the shield cycle, while Meditation and Mental Agility affect resource planning. Penance used for damage is unavailable for an immediate healing response.

  • Use Power Infusion, when allocated, on a caster who can exploit the casting window. Coordinate it before the pull so the recipient does not spend the buff running between targets.
  • Pair Inner Focus with an expensive useful heal, such as Prayer of Healing on an injured party, rather than using the free cast on a trivial top-up.
  • Dispel Magic and Cure Disease can prevent continued damage. Removing the cause can be more effective than repeatedly healing through it; retain enough Mana and reaction time for this utility.

Specialization mechanics and group play

Soul Warding supports repeated shielding; Renewed Hope interacts with healing targets affected by Weakened Soul. The goal is coordinated shield-and-heal timing, not blindly shielding every player on every global.

Divine Aegis rewards supported healing critical strikes in the later build. Critical Strike has a real talent interaction, but effective healing still matters more than an overhealing number.

Healers use a priority based on incoming damage. Keep the tank alive, handle a player facing lethal damage, remove dangerous effects, then recover the group without emptying your Mana on unnecessary top-ups.

In PvP, keep shields and instant options available while moving, dispel priority enemy buffs or friendly debuffs, and use Psychic Scream with awareness of nearby uncontrolled enemies.

Stats and equipment decisions

Priority / equipmentHow to use it
Healing PowerThe first throughput comparison: more effective healing from the casts you already need.
MP5 / SpiritMP5 continues through active casting. Spirit supports recovery and works with Meditation; use deliberate gaps instead of continually casting into full Health.
IntellectProvides Mana reserve and spell critical chance. A larger pool is helpful, but does not make wasteful healing efficient.
Critical StrikeSupports the later Renewed Hope and Divine Aegis interactions. Assess it with the actual allocated talents rather than applying a Holy healing ranking automatically.

Enchanting equipment

For inexpensive leveling preparation, Enchant Bracer - Inferior Stamina and Enchant Chest - Inferior Stamina add survival to equipment you expect to keep. Prioritize an important weapon or role-specific item upgrade before spending heavily on temporary armor.

Consumables and preparation

Lesser Cleric's Elixir

Prepare this healer-focused elixir for a dungeon where stronger healing reduces the number of casts you need.

Minor Mana Oil

Use the Mana recovery weapon oil for a long healing session; apply it before entering combat.

Minor Wizard Oil

An alternative weapon oil when spell throughput matters more than recovery; compare the actual bonuses instead of applying both.

Briny Seafood Stew

Prepare your food buff before pulling. Eat and drink while the group is recovering, rather than waiting until the next pull has started.

Healing Potion

Carry an emergency self-heal. Healing yourself without spending a cast can leave that cast available for the tank.

Triage Tea

Use between pulls to recover Mana. Tell the tank when you are drinking so the group does not begin a dangerous pull without its healer.

Useful profession pairings

Tailoring supplies cloth gear, while Enchanting turns unneeded drops into materials and improves the equipment you keep. This is a practical self-sufficient caster pairing.

Alchemy with Herbalism supplies your own elixirs and recovery consumables. It is particularly useful when repeated healing or quest pulls consume expensive Mana supplies.

Learn Cooking and First Aid as well. A bandage can recover Health without spending Mana when you have a safe window; do not channel it while damage is repeatedly interrupting it.

Races and racial abilities

Undead offers Will of the Forsaken and the Forever recovery utility of Cannibalize; for Shadow, Touch of the Grave adds another damage interaction. These are specific benefits rather than an unsupported universal racial ranking.

Priest race choice also affects the race-specific spell toolkit. Compare the spells relevant to your healing or damage role alongside the faction you intend to play.

Use the available Forever race combinations, including Skyborne traditions where applicable. Do not add a TBC-only race because an older Priest guide recommended it.

Leveling and solo play

  1. A wand-based solo routine preserves Mana: shield if needed, apply a useful damage spell, then wand a nearly dead enemy instead of spending another full cast.
  2. For dungeon leveling, keep Fortitude and Inner Fire active, drink before a difficult pull, and tell the tank when your Mana will not support an additional pack.
  3. Use the displayed level-30 healing build for a group role. The separate DPS build has a different purpose; its Holy Fire and Smite emphasis should not be presented as the standard tank-healing allocation.
  4. Train useful healing ranks and keep a good wand. A strong damage wand helps questing without requiring you to rebuild the healer tree after every dungeon.

Useful macros

Mouseover heal

#showtooltip Flash Heal
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Flash Heal

Heal the friendly unit beneath the cursor without losing your selected target. Change the spell name for another direct heal; the macro does not choose the correct heal for you.

Mouseover friendly dispel

#showtooltip Dispel Magic
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Dispel Magic

Removes a friendly debuff from the hovered player. It is intentionally friendly-only so a mistaken mouseover does not spend a global dispelling the enemy.

Strengths and weaknesses
