Rogues use Energy and combo points to prepare finishing moves. Assassination emphasizes daggers and poisons, Combat develops sustained weapon damage and cleave, and Subtlety adds bleeds, Ambush opportunities and cooldown resets.
Mutilate is a core Combo Point generator for Assassination Rogues. Make sure you have enough Energy available before using it, and avoid unnecessary abilities that would delay your next Mutilate.

Before Mutilate, build with Sinister Strike when using a non-dagger main hand. Backstab needs a suitable dagger and positioning; in a group the tank makes this easier than solo combat.
Sinister Strike is your main Combo Point generator when using a sword, mace, axe or fist weapon in your main hand. If you choose a Backstab build instead, you need a dagger and must attack from behind your target.

Leveling a Rogue
Dual Wield and Slice and Dice are important early Rogue abilities. Equip a suitable off-hand weapon and use Slice and Dice during fights long enough to benefit from its increased attack speed.
Carry poison supplies, food, bandages and healing potions. Elixir of Agility is a damage option. Forever allows poisons and a sharpening stone on the same weapon, so that combination is worth considering before a difficult run.
