Feral Combat Druid guide

Feral Combat supports both Cat damage and Bear tanking. The form changes your job: Cat tracks Energy and combo points, while Bear manages Rage, positioning and incoming damage.

Beta gameplay guide · Updated 12 October 2026

Rotation and opener

For Cat, approach from behind and prepare your bleed cycle. For Bear, enter the tanking form, mark the kill target and establish threat before the group commits damage.

Combat priority

  1. Tiger's Fury

Cat: use Tiger’s Fury with room to benefit from energy gained by King of the Jungle. The supplied talent grants 20 Energy at its documented first rank. Avoid pressing an energy-generating cooldown while already at full energy.

  2. Rake

Cat: apply Rake to a target that will survive the bleed. Keep it ticking while building combo points; do not refresh it every time you have energy.

  3. Shred

Cat: attack from behind when the encounter permits Shred. Spend a clearcasting opportunity on a valuable attack instead of wasting it by continuing to wait at full energy.

  4. Rip

Cat: build to five combo points and maintain Rip on durable enemies. Plan the next builder early enough that Rip does not fall off while you are short of both energy and combo points.

  5. Ferocious Bite

Cat: use excess combo points for Bite when doing so will not prevent the next Rip refresh. A large Bite followed by a long gap in Rip is not a free damage gain.

  6. Mangle

Bear: use Mangle on the primary target to establish threat. Keep Lacerate active on enemies that survive long enough for its bleed, and spend spare Rage on Maul.

  7. Lacerate

Bear: build and maintain Lacerate’s bleed stacks on a durable target. Reapply before the stack falls off, and use spare globals on the rest of your threat toolkit.

  8. Maul

Bear: spend excess rage on Maul. Keep enough rage for the next active threat ability instead of queuing Maul indiscriminately when the incoming damage is low.

Multiple targets and dungeon pulls

Bear: gather enemies with Faerie Fire and positioning, then use Swipe while changing targets to maintain threat on the whole pack. Keep loose enemies in front of you; chasing one creature while turning your back to the rest makes the pull less safe.

Cat: maintain useful bleeds on durable targets and focus the enemy your group must kill first. When the party needs a tank, change to Bear deliberately and establish threat before assuming Cat damage has already controlled the pack.

Resources and cooldowns

Cat must pool Energy for its next finisher. Bear must save Rage for control and survival. Berserk is a planned offensive window. Current beta Cat references include Shifting Power; the calculator’s older supplied tree does not include that record, so its talent allocation is not interchangeable.

  • Cat Berserk: prepare a target that will stay in reach and use the cooldown during a stable damage window. Avoid spending most of its duration moving between enemies or waiting for an encounter transition.
  • Bear Berserk: use the form-specific effect to strengthen threat on a dangerous collected pull. It is not a reason to ignore Frenzied Regeneration, Barkskin or the healer’s mana.
  • Frenzied Regeneration is an emergency Bear recovery tool. Use it while you still have enough health to survive the next hit, and tell the healer when the pull is unstable.

Specialization mechanics and group play

Cat uses energy and combo points; Bear uses rage. Track the resource appropriate to the form instead of treating shifting as an automatic refill. Furor’s current tooltip differs from the original Classic powershifting loop.

Genesis and Rend and Tear make bleed management an important part of Cat damage. Refreshing every bleed early wastes energy; letting every bleed expire together leaves you with more work than one global can repair.

Primal Fury rewards critical strikes with form-specific resources. Predatory Instincts strengthens Cat critical damage, while Natural Reaction supplies Bear survivability. A damage-first allocation and a tank-first allocation therefore have different reasons to choose the lower rows.

A Bear opener is a controlled pull, Faerie Fire on the priority enemy, your main threat attack, and Lacerate. Add Swipe for additional enemies, use Growl on a loose target, and avoid breaking crowd control with area damage.

A Cat opener starts in Prowl when feasible, then establishes the bleed cycle and builds toward Rip. Position behind the target without standing in a frontal mechanic or forcing the tank to move it for you.

Carry separate healing equipment. Leaving form to heal consumes casting mana and stops your melee work, so use a safe recovery window rather than shifting out while tanking a pack at low health.

PvP talent choices and play

Feral Charge and movement tools help create contact or a retreat. Use Bear defensively when needed, but remember that changing form does not remove the need to watch health, resources and enemy control.

Recommended gear & upgrades

Druids cannot equip shields or dual-wield weapons. Cat and Bear use one weapon setup: a usable two-handed weapon, or a one-handed weapon without an off-hand weapon. A held-in-off-hand item is not a second weapon.

For Cat, compare Strength, Agility and any Feral-specific effect on the weapon. Weapon tooltip speed does not set your attack speed in Cat Form. Manual Crowd Pummeler has 16 Strength and 5 Agility in the item database; compare those stats and its documented effect with your other available weapons.

For Bear, compare Stamina and bonus armor as well as damage stats. Dendweller’s Hammer has 12 Stamina and 100 bonus armor in the database, making it a useful defensive option to compare. Heavehammer has 60 bonus armor. These are equipment comparisons, not an invented final BiS order.

Stats and equipment decisions

Priority / equipmentHow to use it
Cat: Agility and attack powerChoose physical damage stats that improve repeated attacks and bleeds. Weapon tooltip speed does not turn your form’s attacks into ordinary Rogue-style weapon swings.
Cat: hit and critical strikeHit makes attacks more reliable; critical strikes work with your Feral talents. Do not import an unsupported endgame rating cap into the current leveling bracket.
Bear: armor and staminaBuild enough durability to survive the pull before chasing damage. Compare the actual armor and health gained by an upgrade instead of choosing it only because it has more Agility.
Bear: Agility and reliable threatAgility supplies useful physical benefits, while reliable attacks help keep enemies controlled. Keep a threat-oriented swap available for safer fights without replacing the defensive set you need for dangerous pulls.

Enchanting equipment

For inexpensive leveling preparation, Enchant Bracer - Inferior Stamina and Enchant Chest - Inferior Stamina add survival to equipment you expect to keep. Prioritize an important weapon or role-specific item upgrade before spending heavily on temporary armor.

Consumables and preparation

Elixir of Agility

A physical-stat option for Cat damage or a useful general Feral boost when your level permits it.

Elixir of Defense

A defensive option for a Bear dungeon session. Select it for survival rather than assuming a damage consumable is always the appropriate tank choice.

Healing Potion

Carry an emergency potion for an unstable pull. Keep it on a reachable key rather than searching bags while tanking.

Mana Potion

Helps recover the casting mana needed for healing and repeated form changes between pulls; it does not refill Cat energy or Bear rage.

Useful profession pairings

Skinning and Leatherworking: turn the leather collected while questing into usable leather equipment. Compare each craft’s actual spell damage, healing or physical stats with the gear you already own before spending materials.

Herbalism and Alchemy: gather herbs along your quest route and keep a supply of mana and useful elixirs. The benefit is repeatable consumable access rather than an assumed exclusive profession damage bonus.

First Aid: keep bandages and healing supplies available even though you can heal. A recovery item can conserve the mana needed for shapeshifting or the next dungeon pull.

Skinning · Leatherworking · Herbalism · Alchemy · Recipe database · Camping buffs

Races and racial abilities

Night Elf: Elune’s Light is an offensive critical-strike cooldown; Shadowmeld is useful for avoiding an unwanted fight. Choose the racial for its practical tools rather than treating the original Classic racial package as unchanged.

Tauren: War Stomp gives a close-range emergency stun. Use it to interrupt pressure long enough to reposition or heal; Endurance adds survivability.

Skyborne: Wind Blessed supplies passive haste, while Elemental Insight helps against elemental enemies. High Order offers Read Ley Line for recovery; Windshaper offers Skysight for movement. Faction choice changes those tools.

Leveling and solo play

  1. Levels 1–9: use Wrath at range and melee to finish when that saves mana. Keep healing available before the next pull rather than beginning a fight already injured.
  2. Bear Form at level 10 gives an early durable combat mode; Cat Form at level 20 changes your solo damage pattern to energy and combo points. Feral Swiftness then improves travel between enemies and quests.
  3. For Cat leveling, front-facing attacks remain useful when solo enemies are looking at you. Do not spend the whole fight trying to get behind an enemy that follows your movement. Use Shred when another player is holding its attention.
  4. Keep armor and stamina pieces for dungeon tanking, and bring mana-based healing gear if you may heal. The same Feral character can change roles, but one item set is not automatically equally strong for every job.

Useful macros

Mouseover Growl

#showtooltip Growl
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][harm,nodead] Growl

Taunts a hostile mouseover without abandoning your current target. Use it for a loose enemy, not simply whenever the cooldown is ready.

Mouseover Rebirth

#showtooltip Rebirth
/cast [@mouseover,help,dead][help,dead] Rebirth

Selects a dead friendly mouseover or dead friendly target. Arrange a safe moment to cast; leaving tank form during heavy incoming damage can be lethal.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • One tree supports damage and tanking
  • Forms provide flexible responses
  • Bleeds maintain pressure between attacks

Limitations

  • Two separate resource systems
  • Role-specific gear matters
  • Cat positioning and Bear facing require attention

Common mistakes

  • Biting just before Rip expires
  • Tanking with enemies behind you
  • Changing to Cat while the group still relies on you to hold threat
