Survival Hunter guide

Survival is a melee Hunter spec in Forever. Strider Kick, Raptor Strike and proc-driven Mongoose Bite form its close-range attacks, with traps and defensive tools supporting the fight.

Beta gameplay guide · Updated 12 October 2026

Rotation and opener

Use Aspect of the Beast, mark the target and approach from a safe angle. Prepare a trap without disturbing the group’s crowd control.

Combat priority

  1. Aspect of the Beast

Use the melee-oriented aspect for the Survival plan. This tree is a melee damage specialization in Forever; do not apply a ranged Marksmanship rotation to it.

  2. Immolation Trap

Place Immolation Trap where the enemy will trigger it. A trap behind the group contributes nothing if the tank never moves the enemy across it.

  3. Mongoose Bite

Spend an available Mongoose Bite opportunity from Expose Prey before it expires. Watch the proc while maintaining melee contact.

  4. Strider Kick

Use Strider Kick in melee range. Position first, then spend the global; running toward a target while repeatedly pressing a melee attack loses time.

  5. Raptor Strike

Use Raptor Strike as part of your sustained melee cycle. Keep enough Mana for the next trap and important situational response.

  6. Hunter’s Mark

Maintain the mark on durable enemies. Apply it before entering melee so it does not interrupt a proc window.

Multiple targets and dungeon pulls

Use traps in the path of the pull and agree with the tank where enemies will stand. Avoid placing a damaging trap beside a controlled enemy.

Continue focusing one priority enemy while using available cleave. Survival still has ranged utility, but stepping away constantly sacrifices the melee attacks that define the build.

Resources and cooldowns

A melee Hunter has to handle incoming mechanics at close range. Deterrence and Survival Tactics are tools to prevent a bad pull from becoming a death, not substitutes for correct positioning.

  • Arrange damaging traps before the pack reaches you. A trap needs an enemy to trigger it; placing it behind a stationary boss is not a damage cooldown.
  • Use Rapid Fire only according to the current Forever interaction supported by your abilities; do not replace the melee priority with a ranged casting sequence.
  • Use Feign Death for a threat mistake and retain control traps for dangerous enemies. Keep your melee proc window separate from the decision to interrupt or protect the healer.

Specialization mechanics and group play

Use a suitable two-handed melee weapon and compare its damage rather than equipping a ranged stat stick as the principal upgrade.

Expose Prey makes proc awareness important. A visible proc cue is useful because a missed Mongoose Bite opportunity cannot be recovered by blindly repeating Raptor Strike.

Stats and equipment decisions

Priority / equipmentHow to use it
Two-handed melee weapon damageSurvival’s Forever melee rotation needs a real melee weapon. Compare the damage used by Raptor Strike rather than prioritizing the bow as if you were Marksmanship.
Agility / Attack PowerChoose melee-relevant damage attributes for Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite. The melee weapon and your proc cycle come before minor ranged-stat improvements.
Hit / critical strikeImprove reliability and burst of your melee attacks. Keep Expose Prey and your actual talent allocation in view when comparing upgrades.
Stamina / IntellectStamina is useful at melee range; Intellect supports traps and the sustained ability cycle. A ranged-only glass-cannon gearing plan can be uncomfortable while solo leveling.

Enchanting equipment

For inexpensive leveling preparation, Enchant Bracer - Inferior Stamina and Enchant Chest - Inferior Stamina add survival to equipment you expect to keep. Prioritize an important weapon or role-specific item upgrade before spending heavily on temporary armor.

Consumables and preparation

Healing Potion

Carry a level-appropriate Healing Potion for an emergency. Use it before the next unavoidable hit kills you rather than waiting for a healer who is already occupied.

Mana Potion

Use the appropriate learned-level version for resource recovery. Higher-level consumables are preparation for later content, not a requirement for an early beta character.

Heavy Silk Bandage

A First Aid recovery option for characters who meet its requirement. Use it during a safe break between attacks; incoming damage interrupts bandaging.

Pet food and ammunition

Carry ammunition suitable for your ranged weapon and food your pet can eat. Refill both before leaving town so a long route does not end with an unusable shooting cycle or neglected pet.

Useful profession pairings

Engineering offers active tools for dangerous pulls and PvP. Bind the devices you actually carry; selecting the profession without using its consumables supplies no practical benefit.

Alchemy supports a regular potion supply, while Herbalism funds that supply during leveling. Buy only the consumables you can use at your present level.

Leatherworking provides an equipment crafting route. Compare the finished item with your current gear and material cost before crafting simply because the recipe is available.

Skinning · Leatherworking · Mining · Engineering · Recipe database · Camping buffs

Races and racial abilities

Choose a supported Hunter race first: Human and Skyborne expand the Forever options alongside the familiar Hunter races.

For pet-focused play, compare Orc pet benefits with Troll Berserking. For PvP, a defensive or escape racial can be more useful than a small sustained damage advantage.

Leveling and solo play

  1. Beast Mastery is a practical solo route because the pet holds enemies while you shoot. Send it onto the next selected enemy only after you have finished the current one and checked the nearby patrols.
  2. Survival leveling uses its melee attacks and traps; Marksmanship rewards positioning and ranged uptime. Keep enough ammunition, food and pet supplies for the route before leaving town.

Useful macros

Pet attack / recall

#showtooltip
/petattack [nomod]
/petfollow [mod:shift]

Press normally to send the pet to your target; hold Shift to recall it. Recall before an unsafe chase or a pack reset.

Feign Death

#showtooltip Feign Death
/cast Feign Death

Keeps your threat recovery on a direct bind. Give the reset time to register before resuming damage.

  • Proc opportunities need attention

Common mistakes

  • Missing a Mongoose Bite opportunity
  • Dropping a trap where the enemy will not stand
  • Treating the spec like a stationary ranged build
